Which Cambridge college appointed C.S. Lewis to teach Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954?
Answer
Magdalene College
Answer
Magdalene College
Magdalene College appointed C.S. Lewis to teach Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954.
In 1954, Lewis became the first occupant of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge. He was elected to a fellowship at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he continued teaching and writing until his death.
Lewis had spent most of his academic career at Oxford, especially at Magdalen College, Oxford. The two institutions have very similar names, which makes this fact particularly easy to misremember. Oxford’s Magdalen is pronounced differently from Cambridge’s Magdalene, and the Cambridge college is the one connected with his later professorship.
Lewis’s Cambridge appointment did not end his relationship with Oxford immediately; he maintained connections there and continued to be recognized as an Oxford literary figure. His move nevertheless marked a major institutional change late in his academic career.
