Shark Tank is the United States version of the business reality format used by Britain's Dragon's Den.
The American programme premiered on ABC in 2009 and features entrepreneurs pitching businesses to a panel of investors called Sharks. Like the British show, it focuses on valuation, investment offers, ownership percentages, and negotiation in front of cameras.
The titles and presentation differ between the two programmes. Britain uses Dragons, while the United States uses Sharks, but both descend from the same international format. The original format came from Japan's Money Tigers.
The Profit and The Apprentice are common alternatives people may think of because they also involve business and entrepreneurship. Neither is the American adaptation of Dragon's Den. Shark Tank is the specific US programme built from that format.
