Which Brontë sister married her father's curate?

The story behind the answer

Charlotte Brontë married her father’s curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls. Nicholls became assistant curate to Patrick Brontë at Haworth in 1845 and gradually developed feelings for Charlotte, whose novel Jane Eyre had made her famous by the time he proposed.

Patrick Brontë initially opposed the match, partly because Nicholls was a relatively poor Irish clergyman. Charlotte first rejected the proposal, but later changed her mind. Her father eventually gave permission, and the couple married on 29 June 1854 at St Michael and All Angels’ Church in Haworth, where Patrick was vicar.

Patrick had intended to give Charlotte away but decided not to attend the ceremony. Instead, Margaret Wooler, Charlotte’s former teacher at Roe Head School, accompanied her to the altar. The marriage lasted only nine months: Charlotte became pregnant soon after the wedding and died on 31 March 1855, aged 38, with the exact medical cause still debated. Nicholls later left Yorkshire after Patrick’s death and returned to Ireland.
