Which Brontë sister died in Scarborough in 1849?

The story behind the answer

Anne Brontë was the Brontë sister who died in Scarborough in 1849.

Anne died on 28 May 1849, aged 29, after travelling to Scarborough in the hope that the seaside air might improve her health. She was accompanied by her sister Charlotte Brontë and Charlotte’s friend Ellen Nussey. Anne’s illness was probably tuberculosis, though nineteenth-century medical records were not precise by modern standards.

Charlotte arranged for Anne to be buried in Scarborough rather than returning her body to Haworth. Anne’s grave is in St Mary’s churchyard, beneath the castle walls and overlooking the sea. She is the only member of the immediate Brontë literary family buried there.

Anne’s death followed the loss of her brother Branwell and sister Emily in 1848. Her short career included Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, the latter now regarded as an important early feminist novel. Emily died in Haworth in 1848, while Charlotte lived until 1855, making Anne the Brontë sister associated with the 1849 Scarborough death.
