Which Brontë sister died at age 30?

The story behind the answer

Emily Brontë died at age 30, making her the Brontë sister who died at that age.

Born on 30 July 1818, Emily was the fifth of Patrick and Maria Brontë’s six children and the sister of Charlotte and Anne. She spent much of her life at Haworth in Yorkshire, where the family’s isolated surroundings and the nearby moors influenced her imagination and writing.

Emily is best known for Wuthering Heights, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The novel initially received mixed and often harsh reviews, but later became one of the major works of English literature. Emily died on 19 December 1848, probably from tuberculosis, only about a year after her novel appeared.

The ages of the sisters are an easy source of mix-ups. Anne Brontë died at 29, while Charlotte lived until 38. Emily’s early death was especially significant because Wuthering Heights was her only published novel.
