Which Brontë novel is narrated by Mr. Lockwood?
Answer
Wuthering Heights
Answer
Wuthering Heights
The Brontë novel narrated initially by Mr. Lockwood is Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Lockwood is the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange and rents the property from Heathcliff. His visit to the isolated farmhouse Wuthering Heights begins the novel’s frame narrative. He encounters the hostile household, reads Catherine Earnshaw’s old diary and experiences a frightening dream before returning to Thrushcross Grange.
The narration then shifts: Lockwood asks his housekeeper, Ellen “Nelly” Dean, to explain the history of Heathcliff, Catherine and the two families. Nelly tells most of the central story, so Lockwood is the opening and framing narrator rather than the sole voice of the novel. Brief sections also include other perspectives and documents.
This structure is a common source of quiz confusion. Jane Eyre is narrated by Charlotte Brontë’s heroine, Jane, while Agnes Grey is narrated by Anne Brontë’s title character. Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s only published novel and appeared in 1847, alongside Anne’s Agnes Grey.
