Which Broadway musical is based on Green Day's music?

The story behind the answer

The Broadway musical based on Green Day’s music is American Idiot. It adapts the band’s 2004 concept album into a sung-through rock musical, using the album’s songs to tell a connected dramatic story.

American Idiot was developed by Green Day and director Michael Mayer. The stage version premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009 before transferring to Broadway’s St. James Theatre, where it officially opened in April 2010. Its story follows three young men—Johnny, Will, and Tunny—as they search for identity, freedom, and purpose amid political tension, war, relationships, and disillusionment.

The score includes songs from American Idiot, along with material from Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown and other songs such as “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” Green Day did not perform as the onstage band, although Billie Joe Armstrong occasionally played St. Jimmy during the Broadway run. The production received three Tony Award nominations and won for scenic design and lighting design. It closed in 2011 after more than 400 regular performances.
