Which broadcaster originally launched the British TV programme Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

BBC Two originally launched the British TV programme Dragons' Den.

The series premiered on BBC Two in January 2005, placing business pitches and investment negotiations within the channel's factual-entertainment output. Its format was designed around entrepreneurs seeking capital from a panel of investors, known on the programme as the Dragons.

The programme's success later allowed it to receive BBC One broadcasts, but that later scheduling should not be mistaken for its original home. BBC Two was the channel associated with the series at launch and with its early years on British television.

The broadcaster is also distinct from the format's international origins. Dragons' Den was adapted for Britain from a Japanese business reality format, while other countries produced their own versions for different broadcasters. BBC Two therefore identifies the original UK broadcaster, not the creator of the underlying format.
