Which British television programme is the United States adaptation of the Dragon's Den format?

The story behind the answer

Shark Tank is the United States adaptation of the Dragon's Den format.

The American series uses the same central idea: entrepreneurs present businesses to a panel of wealthy investors and negotiate over possible funding and ownership. In the United States, the investors are called sharks rather than dragons, giving the local version its title.

Shark Tank premiered in 2009 and was broadcast by ABC. Its panel has included prominent American business figures such as Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John.

The two programmes are related through format licensing, but they are not the same series. Their panels, presenters, episodes and deals differ, and a business appearing on one programme is not automatically part of the other show's investment history.
