Camelot won the 2012 Epsom Derby before becoming a successful sire.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Joseph O’Brien, Camelot won the 2012 Epsom Derby for the Coolmore operation. He had already won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, leaving him one victory short of the English Triple Crown. Camelot finished second in the St Leger at Doncaster, so he did not complete the historic series.
Camelot continued his stud career at Coolmore Stud in Ireland and became an important sire. His notable offspring include the 2019 Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and the 2023 Melbourne Cup winner Without A Fight. The horse is sometimes confused with King Arthur in popular references, but Camelot’s name was chosen as a direct allusion to Arthurian legend.
