Which British prime minister won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Winston Churchill won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

Churchill received the award for his historical and biographical writing and for his brilliant oratory in defending human values. He was a British statesman, historian, journalist, and wartime prime minister.

His major literary works include The World Crisis, a history of the First World War, and The Second World War, a six-volume account of the conflict. He also wrote biographies of his ancestor John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, and his father, Lord Randolph Churchill.

Churchill is often remembered mainly as a political leader, which can make this award surprising. The Nobel committee recognized his literary achievement, not simply his public speeches. He remains one of the few heads of government to have received the Literature prize.
