Which British naval officer commanded the Lake Erie fleet?

The story behind the answer

Which British naval officer commanded the Lake Erie fleet? Robert Heriot Barclay commanded the British squadron. He took charge of the Royal Navy and Provincial Marine vessels on Lake Erie during the War of 1812, facing the American fleet led by Oliver Hazard Perry.

Barclay's command was difficult from the beginning. The British squadron suffered from shortages of experienced sailors, and Barclay himself had already lost an arm in an earlier naval engagement. Despite these disadvantages, he actively searched for Perry's fleet and eventually met it near Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on September 10, 1813.

The Battle of Lake Erie ended in an American victory. Barclay was severely wounded, losing a leg and suffering injuries to his remaining arm, and the British squadron surrendered. The defeat gave the United States control of the lake, forcing the British to abandon Detroit and retreat from parts of the western theater. Barclay is sometimes confused with George Downie, who commanded British naval forces on Lake Champlain, not Lake Erie.
