Which British major general commanded against U.S. forces at the Battle of Chippawa?
Answer
Phineas Riall
Answer
Phineas Riall
Major General Phineas Riall commanded the British force opposing the United States at the Battle of Chippawa.
The battle was fought on July 5, 1814, during the American invasion of Upper Canada along the Niagara River. Riall commanded the British Army’s Right Division in Upper Canada, a force that included British regulars, Canadian militia, and Indigenous allies. He advanced from the Chippawa area to challenge American troops under Major General Jacob Brown and Brigadier General Winfield Scott.
Riall believed the Americans were largely inexperienced militia, partly because many wore gray uniforms rather than the expected blue. In reality, Scott’s brigade consisted of well-trained American regulars. The resulting engagement became a major American victory and demonstrated that U.S. regular troops could fight British veterans on near-equal terms.
Riall’s force withdrew after suffering heavy losses. He later commanded British troops at Lundy’s Lane, where he was wounded and captured. Manley Power and Thomas Brisbane were also prominent British officers in the Niagara campaign, but neither was the principal commander of the British force at Chippawa.
