Which British general was killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights?
Answer
Isaac Brock
Answer
Isaac Brock
Major General Sir Isaac Brock was the British general killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights. He was shot in the chest on October 13, 1812, while leading a counterattack against American forces in Upper Canada, now Ontario.
Queenston Heights was the first major engagement of the War of 1812. American troops crossed the Niagara River from Lewiston, New York, and captured a British artillery position on the heights. Brock rushed to the battlefield and personally led regulars and militia in an attempt to retake it. An American marksman fatally wounded him during the assault.
Brock’s death was a severe loss, but British forces under Major General Roger Hale Sheaffe eventually defeated the American invasion and forced a surrender. Brock had already become famous for capturing Detroit earlier in 1812 and was remembered in Upper Canada as “The Hero of Upper Canada.” A common confusion is with Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonell, Brock’s aide, who was also mortally wounded during the battle but was not the British general being asked about.
