Which British fragrance house was founded by William Penhaligon in 1870?

The story behind the answer

William Penhaligon founded the British fragrance house Penhaligon’s in 1870.

William Henry Penhaligon was a Cornish barber and perfumer who moved to London and opened a barbershop. The company dates its foundation to 1870, and its early identity was closely connected with grooming, shaving, and fragrance products for London customers.

Penhaligon’s became known for named perfumes and distinctive presentation. One of its best-known early fragrances is Hammam Bouquet, introduced in 1872 and inspired by the Turkish bath near Penhaligon’s original location. Blenheim Bouquet followed in 1902 and was named after Blenheim Palace.

Penhaligon’s is sometimes confused with Floris, another historic British fragrance house. Floris was established earlier, in 1730, while Penhaligon’s dates from 1870. The apostrophe in the brand name refers to its founder, William Penhaligon, rather than to a place called Penhaligon.
