Which British driver won the Formula One World Championship in 1992 and the American CART/IndyCar title the following year?

The story behind the answer

Nigel Mansell won the 1992 Formula One World Championship and the American CART/IndyCar title the following year.

Mansell dominated the 1992 F1 season with Williams-Renault, winning nine races and securing the championship at the Hungarian Grand Prix with five races still remaining. His 108 points set a record total under the scoring system then in use, and he became the first British champion since James Hunt in 1976.

After leaving Formula One, Mansell moved to the United States and joined Newman/Haas Racing for the 1993 CART season. He won the season-opening Surfers Paradise race and later captured the championship, becoming the first rookie to win the CART title. His victory was especially notable because he competed on both road courses and oval tracks, including Indianapolis.

A common mix-up is confusing Mansell’s 1993 CART championship with an Indianapolis 500 victory: he won the IndyCar title but did not win the 1993 Indianapolis 500. His F1 championship came in 1992, while his American open-wheel title followed in 1993.
