Which British broadcaster produces the television show Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

The BBC produces the British television show Dragons' Den.

The programme was created for the BBC and premiered on BBC Two in January 2005. It places entrepreneurs before a panel of investors who are invited to offer money for an ownership stake. The BBC’s factual-entertainment schedule has carried the series through successive changes in presenters, Dragons, studio production, and business trends.

BBC Two is the channel most closely associated with the programme, while the BBC is the broadcaster responsible for the British version. That distinction matters because a broadcaster and a channel are not exactly the same thing. The programme’s production and distribution history can also be confused with overseas adaptations, which are made by broadcasters in their own countries.

Dragons' Den is not the same programme as Shark Tank, despite the shared pitch format. Shark Tank is the American adaptation, while the BBC version uses the British panel, British business law and currency, and the “Dragon” branding. Those local differences make the BBC source especially relevant when identifying the British series.
