Which Brazilian driver won three Formula One World Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1991?

The story behind the answer

The Brazilian driver who won Formula One World Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1991 was Ayrton Senna.

Senna won his first title in 1988 after joining McLaren, driving the dominant Honda-powered MP4/4. McLaren won 15 of the season’s 16 races, with Senna taking eight victories and finishing ahead of teammate Alain Prost in the championship battle.

His second title came in 1990, again with McLaren, during an intense rivalry with Prost, who had moved to Ferrari. Senna secured his third championship in 1991, becoming the youngest three-time world champion at that time. He won seven races that season and started the campaign with four consecutive victories.

Senna’s statistics help distinguish him from other Brazilian champions. Nelson Piquet also won three titles, but his championships came in 1981, 1983, and 1987. Emerson Fittipaldi was Brazil’s first champion, winning in 1972 and 1974. Senna finished his Formula One career with 41 wins and 65 pole positions before his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
