Which Brazilian city hosted golf's return to the Summer Olympics in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Rio de Janeiro hosted golf’s return to the Summer Olympics in 2016. The competitions were played at the Olympic Golf Course in the Reserva de Marapendi area of Barra da Tijuca, in western Rio.

Golf had been absent from the Olympic program for more than a century. It last appeared at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, where the format and field were very different from the modern Olympic events. The International Olympic Committee voted in 2009 to restore golf for the 2016 and 2020 Games.

Rio featured two 72-hole stroke-play competitions: a men’s individual event from August 11–14 and a women’s individual event from August 17–20. Justin Rose won the men’s gold medal, while Inbee Park won the women’s title.

The city is sometimes confused with Brasília, São Paulo, or Salvador because all are major Brazilian cities. However, the Olympic venue and the 2016 Games themselves were in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose-built course was designed by Gil Hanse and later became a public facility.
