Which book begins C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Out of the Silent Planet begins C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.
Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet introduces philologist Elwin Ransom, who is abducted and taken to Mars, called Malacandra by its inhabitants. The novel combines planetary adventure with philosophical and theological ideas, presenting a vision of Mars that contrasts with the corruption Ransom encounters on Earth.
The second volume is Perelandra, published in 1943, and the concluding novel is That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Readers sometimes reverse the first two titles because Perelandra is also a major setting and because all three books were written as connected speculative fiction rather than as a conventional episodic adventure series.
Lewis’s trilogy is also called the Ransom Trilogy, after its central character. It was among his earliest important works of fiction for adults.
