Which Boeing military helicopter is known as the Apache?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing AH-64 is the military helicopter known as the Apache.

The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter developed originally by Hughes Helicopters. McDonnell Douglas acquired Hughes Helicopters in 1984, and Boeing later became responsible for the program after its 1997 merger with McDonnell Douglas.

The helicopter was designed for anti-armor missions and close air support. It carries a 30-millimeter chain gun beneath the forward fuselage and can use a range of guided and unguided weapons. Its mast-mounted Longbow radar is fitted on certain versions, including the AH-64D and AH-64E.

The Apache entered U.S. Army service in 1986. “Apache” is the name of the helicopter, while AH-64 is its official U.S. military designation. The CH-47 Chinook is another Boeing helicopter, but it is a heavy-lift transport rather than an attack aircraft.
