Which Boeing aircraft was designated the 737-100?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 737-100 was the shortest and first production model of the original Boeing 737 family.

Boeing developed the 737-100 as a compact twin-engine jet for short- and medium-haul routes. It first flew on April 9, 1967, and Lufthansa became the launch customer, receiving the type for commercial operations in 1968.

Only 30 737-100 aircraft were built. Airlines generally favored the slightly stretched 737-200, which offered more seats and became the more successful member of the original series.

The 737-100 is sometimes confused with the 737-200 because both belong to the Original series and share the same basic design. The 737-100 had a shorter fuselage and was eventually eclipsed by the larger model. Neither should be confused with the 737 Classic or 737 Next Generation families.
