Which Boeing 747 variant introduced winglets as standard equipment?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 747-400 introduced winglets as standard equipment on a production 747 variant.

The 747-400 was developed as an advanced version of the 747-300. Its prominent winglets, each about 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall, reduced induced drag and improved fuel efficiency compared with an otherwise similar aircraft using conventional wingtips.

The variant also added a two-person flight deck, a redesigned wing, increased range, and updated avionics. These changes helped make the 747-400 the dominant long-range passenger version of the 747 family for many years.

The 747-8 later used raked wingtips rather than the 747-400’s upright winglets, so the two designs should not be confused. Winglets were not simply a cosmetic feature: they were intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency, especially on long flights.
