Which Boeing aircraft was the first to use the company’s Super Hornet name?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing F/A-18E/F was the first aircraft to use the Super Hornet name.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a larger, extensively redesigned development of the earlier McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Although it retains the Hornet name and general mission concept, the Super Hornet has a larger airframe, increased internal fuel, improved avionics, and greater payload capability.

The single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F entered United States Navy service in the late 1990s. Boeing became the prime contractor after its merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, so the aircraft is commonly identified as a Boeing design in later references.

The EA-18G Growler is an electronic-warfare derivative of the two-seat F/A-18F. It is closely related but is not the aircraft that introduced the Super Hornet designation.
