Which Boeing aircraft is known as the Globemaster III?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing aircraft known as the Globemaster III is the C-17 Globemaster III.

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft designed to carry troops, vehicles, and cargo over long distances and to operate from relatively short or austere airfields. It combines strategic airlift range with tactical airlift capabilities.

The aircraft is powered by four Pratt & Whitney F117 turbofan engines and has a distinctive high-wing layout, rear loading ramp, and externally blown flaps. These features help it take off and land on shorter runways than many comparably large transports. The C-17 also supports aerial delivery and medical evacuation missions.

The name Globemaster III connects the aircraft with two earlier Douglas transports: the C-74 Globemaster and C-124 Globemaster II. Although Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997, the C-17 program originated at McDonnell Douglas and later became part of Boeing’s military-aircraft portfolio.
