The Boeing 747 family includes the freighter known as the Dreamlifter.
The Dreamlifter is Boeing’s large outsize cargo aircraft, officially designated the 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter. Boeing converted four used 747-400 passenger aircraft to transport major 787 Dreamliner components between suppliers and final-assembly sites.
The conversion added a greatly enlarged upper fuselage and a distinctive hinged tail that opens upward. This unusual structure allows the aircraft to load sections too large for conventional freighters. The name “Dreamlifter” echoes the Dreamliner name used for the 787.
Although the Dreamlifter supports production of the 787, it is not a 787 variant. It remains a heavily modified 747-400. The Airbus Beluga and BelugaXL serve a broadly similar outsize-cargo role for Airbus, but they are separate aircraft families and are not Boeing 747 conversions.
