Which Boeing 777 variant is recognized as the longest-range commercial airliner?

The story behind the answer

The Boeing 777-200LR is recognized as the longest-range production Boeing 777 variant.

The “LR” in 777-200LR means Long Range. Boeing developed the aircraft with strengthened structures, additional fuel capacity, and high-thrust engines so it could fly very long nonstop routes. Its published maximum range is about 15,843 kilometres, or 8,555 nautical miles, depending on the stated configuration.

The 777-200LR set a distance record during a 2005 demonstration flight from Hong Kong to London by flying eastward over the United States, covering roughly 21,600 kilometres. That record flight was not a regular airline service.

The 777-300ER is longer and highly capable, but it is not the longest-range 777 variant. The 777-8 is a newer member of the 777X family and is designed for very long range, yet the 777-200LR remains the established answer for the original 777 family’s maximum-range variant.
