Solana introduced Proof of History as a core timing innovation in its blockchain design.
Proof of History is a cryptographic method for creating a verifiable sequence of events. Rather than requiring every participant to repeatedly agree on the passage of time, the system uses a continuously generated record that helps nodes determine when events occurred relative to one another.
Solana combines this timing mechanism with other components, including a proof-of-stake consensus system and a block-producing schedule. The design aims to reduce coordination overhead and support high transaction throughput. Proof of History is therefore not simply a replacement label for proof of stake; it serves a different role in Solana’s architecture.
The concept was described by Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko in a 2017 white paper. Solana’s mainnet beta launched in March 2020. Comparisons with Ethereum or Cardano can be misleading because each network uses its own combination of timing, validation, execution, and economic rules.
