Which bird is the official bird of Quebec, Canada?
Answer
Snowy owl
Answer
Snowy owl
The snowy owl is the official bird of Quebec, Canada.
Quebec adopted the snowy owl, or Bubo scandiacus, as its official bird in 1987. The choice reflects the province’s northern identity and the owl’s association with Québec’s Arctic and subarctic landscapes. Its bright plumage also makes it a distinctive symbol, although females and juveniles usually show more dark barring than adult males.
Snowy owls breed across the Arctic tundra and may move south during winters when food is scarce. Unlike many owls, they often hunt in daylight, especially during the Arctic summer when the sun remains above the horizon. Their diet is strongly tied to small mammals, particularly lemmings.
The snowy owl is not the same as Canada’s national bird, because Canada has no officially designated national bird. It is also different from the common loon, which is Ontario’s provincial bird. Quebec’s emblem should not be confused with a provincial flower or animal: the snowy owl specifically holds the province’s official-bird designation.
