Which eagle is the national bird of Panama?
Answer
Harpy eagle
Answer
Harpy eagle
The harpy eagle is the national bird of Panama.
Known scientifically as Harpia harpyja, this powerful Neotropical raptor lives mainly in tropical lowland rainforest, hunting in the canopy. It is among the world's largest living eagles, with broad wings, strong talons, and a distinctive crown of feathers.
Panama also features the harpy eagle on its coat of arms, making the bird both a national symbol and a conservation emblem. Habitat loss, forest fragmentation, hunting, and nest destruction have reduced its range, especially in Central America.
A common mix-up is the bald eagle, which is the national bird of the United States. The harpy eagle is a different species and is named for the harpies of Greek mythology; “American harpy eagle” distinguishes it from the Papuan eagle, sometimes called the New Guinea harpy eagle.
