Answer
Hooded pitohui
The common name of Pitohui dichrous is the hooded pitohui.
This medium-sized New Guinea songbird has a black head, wings, and tail contrasted with reddish-brown underparts. It is found mainly in forests, forest edges, and secondary growth, where it eats fruit, seeds, and invertebrates and often joins mixed-species feeding flocks.
The hooded pitohui is famous for containing batrachotoxin compounds in its skin, feathers, and other tissues, making it one of the world’s few known poisonous birds. Researchers believe the toxin is acquired through its diet, probably from beetles of the genus Choresine, rather than manufactured by the bird itself.
The species was described by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850. Taxonomic research later showed that pitohuis once grouped together were not all close relatives; the hooded pitohui is now placed in the Old World oriole family, Oriolidae.
