Which bird is the fastest running bird?

The story behind the answer

The ostrich is the fastest-running bird.

Native to Africa, the ostrich is the world’s largest and heaviest living bird. It cannot fly, but its powerful legs make it an exceptional runner. Adults can reach roughly 70 km/h in sustained movement, with reported top speeds approaching 80– pueda?97 km/h depending on the source and measurement. Its long stride can cover several metres at a time.

Ostriches have two toes on each foot, unlike most birds, which have three or four. The large inner toe carries a strong claw and provides much of the propulsion. Their elastic tendons and efficient leg muscles help them run economically across open savanna and desert landscapes.

The emu, rhea, and roadrunner are also fast ground birds, but none normally matches the ostrich’s top speed. “Fastest bird” without the word running can cause confusion: birds such as peregrine falcons are far faster in flight, especially during a dive.
