Which bird is known for its large, colorful bill?
Answer
Toucan
Answer
Toucan
The bird known for its large, colorful bill is the toucan.
Toucans are Neotropical birds found from Mexico through Central and South America. Their bills can be remarkably large compared with their bodies and often combine vivid colors such as orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The bill is surprisingly lightweight because it is built from a lattice of keratin supported by hollow spaces.
The bill helps toucans reach fruit on slender branches, but it also has other jobs. It can peel or manipulate food, threaten rivals, and help release heat through its rich network of blood vessels. Toucans eat mostly fruit, although insects, eggs, and small vertebrates also feature in their diet.
A common mix-up is the hornbill, another bird group with a prominent bill. Hornbills are generally associated with Africa and Asia, while toucans are native to the Americas. The keel-billed toucan is especially famous for its multicolored bill, whereas the toco toucan has the largest bill among toucans.
