Which bird is known for its ability to mimic human speech?

The story behind the answer

The parrot is the bird commonly known for its ability to mimic human speech.

Many parrots can reproduce words, phrases, household noises, and other sounds they hear. They do not have vocal cords; instead, they produce sound with the syrinx, a specialized vocal organ at the base of the trachea. Their intelligence, social nature, and capacity for learned vocalization make them especially effective mimics.

The African grey parrot is particularly celebrated. Research involving Irene Pepperberg’s grey parrot Alex showed that some parrots can associate words with objects, colors, shapes, and quantities rather than merely repeating sounds. Another grey parrot, N’kisi, was reported to have learned around 1,000 words, although claims about animal language remain scientifically debated.

Parrots are not the only birds capable of human-speech mimicry. Hill mynas, starlings, lyrebirds, mockingbirds, and some ravens can also imitate voices. Nevertheless, “parrot” is the conventional answer because parrots are globally recognized for talking-pet performances and have been kept as companion birds for centuries.
