Which biopic about Alan Turing features Benedict Cumberbatch?
Answer
The Imitation Game
Answer
The Imitation Game
The Imitation Game is the biopic about Alan Turing featuring Benedict Cumberbatch. Directed by Morten Tyldum, the 2014 film follows Turing’s wartime codebreaking work at Bletchley Park, where he helped develop methods for deciphering Nazi Germany’s Enigma messages.
The screenplay was based on Andrew Hodges’s biography Alan Turing: The Enigma. Keira Knightley co-stars as Joan Clarke, a brilliant mathematician and cryptanalyst who worked with Turing. The film’s title refers to a thought experiment Turing proposed in his 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” now commonly associated with the Turing test.
The movie received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It won one Oscar, for Graham Moore’s Best Adapted Screenplay. Cumberbatch was nominated for Best Actor, but the award went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything.
A frequent source of confusion is the film’s historical accuracy. The Imitation Game captures Turing’s importance but changes or compresses several events and relationships for dramatic effect. Turing himself was prosecuted for homosexuality after the war and received a posthumous royal pardon in 2013.
