Which 2023 biographical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer won Best Picture? Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film dramatizes the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, especially his leadership of the Manhattan Project during World War II. Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer, with the story adapted from the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

At the 96th Academy Awards, held on March 10, 2024, Oppenheimer won seven Oscars from 13 nominations. Its other victories included Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Film Editing, Cinematography, and Original Score.

A common mix-up is the film’s release year versus its awards year: Oppenheimer premiered in 2023, but it won Best Picture at the ceremony held in 2024. Ferrari, Napoleon, and Maestro were also 2023 films, but none won the category.
