Answer
The Man Who Knew Infinity
The 2015 biographical film about mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan starring Dev Patel is The Man Who Knew Infinity.
Written and directed by Matthew Brown, the film is based on Robert Kanigel’s 1991 biography of the same name. Dev Patel plays Ramanujan, who grew up in Madras, India, and developed extraordinary mathematical ideas despite having little formal training or access to the academic institutions of his era.
The story centers on Ramanujan’s relationship with English mathematician G. H. Hardy, played by Jeremy Irons. Hardy invites him to Cambridge during World War I, where Ramanujan must prove the value of his intuition-based work in a culture that demands formal proofs. The film also depicts racial prejudice, homesickness, and the strain placed on his marriage to Janaki.
Ramanujan’s Cambridge years led to major recognition, including his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. His health deteriorated, however, and he died in India in 1920 at age 32. The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival after spending eight years in development.
