Lemonade is the Beyoncé album released in 2016 with an accompanying film of the same title.
The album premiered on April 23, 2016, following the broadcast of Beyoncé’s hour-long film Lemonade on HBO. Its songs and spoken-word passages form a cycle addressing themes including betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, heritage, and resilience.
The project draws on multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, reggae, and hip-hop. Its guest contributors include Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. “Formation,” one of its best-known songs, became especially associated with the album’s cultural impact.
Lemonade is distinct from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album. Both projects use visual storytelling, but Lemonade was presented as a more unified film and album narrative.
