Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about Black womanhood and Southern history is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, initially as a surprise project through HBO and digital music services. It combines songs with a film divided into chapters such as “Intuition,” “Denial,” and “Redemption.”
The album explores infidelity, grief, ancestry, resilience, and Black identity. Its music draws on R&B, rock, country, blues, reggae, hip-hop, and spoken word, making it one of Beyoncé’s most stylistically varied releases.
The title is linked to a passage associated with Jay-Z’s grandmother, Hattie White, who speaks about making lemonade from life’s difficulties. Lemonade is distinct from Renaissance, Beyoncé’s 2022 dance-oriented album.
