Lemonade was released in 2016 as a visual album with twelve accompanying music videos.
Beyoncé released the album on April 23, 2016, following the premiere of its hour-long film on HBO. The project combines R&B, rock, soul, hip-hop, country, blues, and spoken-word poetry, creating a narrative about betrayal, grief, reconciliation, Black identity, and family.
Lemonade became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200. Its visual presentation is central to the work rather than a separate promotional add-on, and the film features poetry by Warsan Shire.
The album is often confused with Renaissance, which began Beyoncé’s three-act project in 2022 but was not released as a twelve-video visual album. Lemonade also includes the singles “Formation,” “Sorry,” and “Hold Up.”
