The Beyoncé album released in 2016 and named after a sweet lemon drink is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after a premiere of its accompanying hour-long film on HBO. It is Beyoncé’s sixth studio album and combines elements of R&B, pop, soul, rock, hip-hop, blues, and country. The project is structured as a series of emotional chapters, including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, hope, and redemption.
Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Daddy Lessons,” and “All Night.” The album’s lyrics and imagery explore identity, family, betrayal, resilience, and Black womanhood. Its title also connects to a passage about turning difficult experiences into something sustaining.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It lost that award, but “Formation” won Best Music Video and the album became one of Beyoncé’s most influential artistic statements.
