Beyoncé’s visual album about Black Southern life and history is Lemonade.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade combined a twelve-track audio album with a sixty-five-minute film broadcast on HBO. The project draws on themes of infidelity, grief, family, Black womanhood, resilience, and cultural memory.
Its film incorporates poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery connected with Louisiana and the wider American South. Beyoncé’s collaborators included artists such as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd.
Lemonade is sometimes described simply as a studio album, but its defining release was a multimedia project. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
