“Five-O” was the first episode in the Breaking Bad universe directed by Michael Morris.
“Five-O” is the sixth episode of Better Call Saul’s first season. Michael Morris directed the episode, which focuses heavily on Mike Ehrmantraut’s past as a Philadelphia police officer and the death of his son, Matt. The story gives Mike a largely self-contained dramatic arc while revealing why he became involved in criminal work.
Morris later directed additional episodes of Better Call Saul, making “Five-O” an early entry in his work on the series. The episode was written by Gordon Smith, who became one of the show’s regular writers and producers.
The title refers to police, a slang term derived from the television series Hawaii Five-O. It is sometimes mistaken for “Pimento,” the preceding episode, or “Inflatable,” another season-one episode. Neither of those episodes was Morris’s Better Call Saul directorial debut.
