Which bean dish is listed as a common topping for nachos?

The story behind the answer

Refried beans are listed as a common topping for nachos.

Refried beans add creaminess, protein, and a savory bean flavor to the crisp tortilla chips and melted cheese that form the base of many nachos. They are especially useful as a substantial topping because they help turn a snack into a more filling plate, often alongside seasoned meat, salsa, jalapeños, or sour cream.

Despite the name, refried beans are not necessarily fried twice. The English term comes from the Spanish “frijoles refritos,” where “refritos” means well-fried or thoroughly cooked again. Beans are typically cooked, mashed, and then fried with fat and seasonings. Pinto beans are common, though other regional varieties may be used.

Nacho toppings vary greatly by restaurant and region. Black beans and whole pinto beans can also appear, while cassoulet, lima beans, and baked beans are not standard choices in the classic nacho topping list. The earliest version associated with Ignacio Anaya was much simpler, using tortilla chips, cheese, and jalapeños rather than the large assortment found on modern loaded nachos.
