Which Beach Boys song from Holland features Blondie Chaplin on lead vocal?

The story behind the answer

The Beach Boys song from Holland featuring Blondie Chaplin on lead vocal is “Sail On, Sailor.” Chaplin, a South African guitarist and singer who joined the group in the early 1970s, gives the track its distinctive, slightly gritty vocal character.

The song was recorded at Village Recorders on November 28, 1972, during the Holland sessions. Its writing credits span Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Ray Kennedy, Tandyn Almer, and Jack Rieley. Carl Wilson produced the recording and contributed extensive instrumentation, while Chaplin also played bass.

The vocal assignment was not automatic: Dennis Wilson tried the song first, then Carl Wilson attempted it. Carl suggested that Chaplin sing the lead, and Chaplin’s performance was selected after two takes. Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Carl Wilson usually supplied the Beach Boys’ best-known lead vocals, making this recording a notable exception.

“Sail On, Sailor” became Holland’s lead single in February 1973 and reached No. 79 in the United States. A 1975 reissue performed better, reaching No. 49.
