Which Beach Boys album was recorded in the Netherlands in 1972?

The story behind the answer

The Beach Boys album recorded in the Netherlands in 1972 was Holland.

The band recorded the album during the summer of 1972 at a converted barn and studio in Baambrugge, near Amsterdam. The unusual location reflected manager Jack Rieley’s desire to move the group away from California and find a fresh creative environment. Engineers dismantled equipment from the band’s Los Angeles studio, shipped it to the Netherlands, and reassembled it there.

Holland was not completed entirely in the Netherlands. The band recorded the basic tracks there from June through August, then returned to Los Angeles for additional work at Village Recorders. The album was finally released on January 8, 1973, on Brother/Reprise.

The wording can cause confusion because Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” was also recorded in 1972, but it was not the Netherlands project. Holland is the album whose title directly reflects the country where its main recording sessions took place. It also included the bonus EP Mount Vernon and Fairway and eventually featured “Sail On, Sailor” as its lead track.
