Which Beach Boys album directly followed Smiley Smile in 1967?

The story behind the answer

Wild Honey directly followed Smiley Smile in the Beach Boys’ album chronology, with both albums released in 1967.

Smiley Smile arrived in September 1967 as a stripped-down, lo-fi successor to the abandoned Smile project. After its release, the Beach Boys moved away from the elaborate studio ambitions associated with Smile and returned to a more self-contained band approach. The resulting album, Wild Honey, was released in December 1967.

Wild Honey marked a turn toward soul and rhythm and blues, drawing inspiration from artists and styles associated with Motown and Stax. The band recorded it quickly between September and November, and the album continued the homespun production character heard on Smiley Smile.

The chronology can be confused because the Beach Boys had several 1967 releases and unfinished projects, including the intended Smile album and the attempted live project Lei’d in Hawaii. The official sequence, however, is Smiley Smile followed by Wild Honey, then Friends in 1968.
