Which Beach Boys album consists mainly of instrumental backing tracks?

The story behind the answer

The Beach Boys album consisting mainly of instrumental backing tracks is Stack-o-Tracks. Released by Capitol Records in 1968, it removed the group’s familiar vocals from recordings and presented instrumental versions that listeners could sing or play along with.

The album contains backing tracks for 15 Beach Boys songs recorded between July 1963 and June 1968. Its repertoire spans different phases of the band’s career, turning finished pop recordings into something resembling an early karaoke or rehearsal collection. The original American LP included a booklet with lyrics, chord symbols, bass lines, and lead lines.

Stack-o-Tracks was unusual for a major rock group and arrived during a commercial low point. It became the first Beach Boys album not to reach the United States charts. The record was initially available only in mono or Duophonic, Capitol’s simulated-stereo format, rather than true stereo.

The album later became a collector’s item. Capitol reissued it on CD in 1990, paired with Beach Boys’ Party!, and again in 2001. Those editions omitted the original vinyl booklet, which remains part of the album’s historical appeal.
