Which BBC presenter hosted the first series of the British television show Dragon's Den?

The story behind the answer

Evan Davis hosted the first series of the British television show Dragon's Den.

Davis is an economist, journalist and broadcaster who became well known for presenting BBC business and current-affairs programmes. His role on Dragon's Den was to introduce the entrepreneurs and frame the programme around their attempts to secure investment from the panel.

He presented the early British series before the hosting role passed to other BBC presenters. The investors, rather than the presenter, conduct the negotiations, so viewers sometimes remember the dragons more readily than the host. Davis nevertheless helped establish the tone and structure of the original UK run.

Evan Davis should not be confused with later Dragon's Den presenters such as Duncan Bannatyne, who was an investor, or broadcasters who hosted related BBC business programmes. The presenter does not decide which pitches receive offers; the dragons make those decisions themselves.
