Which bay on the Atlantic coast of Morocco is overlooked by the city of Agadir?

The story behind the answer

The bay on Morocco’s Atlantic coast overlooked by Agadir is the Bay of Agadir.

Agadir is a major Moroccan port city on the Atlantic, in the Souss-Massa region near the mouth of the Souss River. The city’s waterfront and harbour face the bay, while the hilltop Kasbah of Agadir Oufla provides a well-known view over the city and its coastal waters. “Bay of Agadir” and “Agadir Bay” are straightforward geographic names for this coastal indentation.

The bay has long been important for trade, fishing and maritime access. Agadir’s harbour was closed to foreign trade until 1881, after which the port became increasingly significant. In the early twentieth century, the bay also entered international history when a German gunboat arrived there in 1911, helping trigger the Agadir Crisis between Germany and France.

The city itself was devastated by an earthquake on 29 February 1960 and rebuilt farther south in a modern style. The bay should not be confused with Dakhla Bay, another Moroccan Atlantic inlet far to the south, or with Tangier Bay on Morocco’s northern coast.
